2007 BMW X3 3.0si Preview
More Power, and Looks to Match by Sue Mead
What it Is

BMW X3 3.0si – Preview: BMW’s entry-level model in the “Sports Activity Vehicle” segment debuts at the 2006 Paris Auto Show refreshed for the new model year. The 2007 BMW X3 3.0si has a more powerful new engine, is better equipped, safer and more stylish than the outgoing X3 3.0i. The five-passenger, 3 Series-based vehicle includes xDrive all-wheel-drive as standard equipment. Exterior changes include new bumpers, a larger kidney grille, clear front corner lights, retractable headlight washers, chrome exhaust tips, LED taillights and new 17-inch wheels. The Sport Package now offers 19-inch wheels and performance tires.

Why it Matters

Remaining competitive in the crossover market is a tough task today. What was once a fringe segment is quickly growing into the mainstream, as many customers have abandoned the larger truck-based SUVs in favor of smaller, more nimble and more efficient car-derived crossovers like the 2007 BMW X3 3.0si. Remaining true to BMW’s loyal fan base is also of paramount concern, since many Bimmer aficionados still adhere to the Ultimate Driving Machine mantra. If this German automaker was to generate a vehicle that disregarded the driving experience, many prospective buyers

What's Under the Hood

Any question regarding the performance of the X3 should be dispelled by the powertrain inside the new model. An aluminum and magnesium 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, it delivers 260 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 225 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm. The 2006 model's 3.0-liter engine created a mere 225 horses and 214 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission; a six-speed automatic with Steptronic may be substituted. BMW claims 0-60 mph times of 6.9 seconds with the manual, 7.1 seconds with the automatic. BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is a standard feature and now includes Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Brake Drying, Brake Standby for emergency applications, Start-off Assist and Brake Fade Compensation (BFC).

What's Inside

Several interior changes render the BMW X3 3.0si more luxurious and refined than the previous model. Nicer dashboard material with wood trim inserts; more door panel upholstery with special stitching when leather seating is optioned; solid door pockets; a new three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel and optional 16-way front seats all enhance the cabin’s environment. BMW has also upgraded the Premium Package to include a rearview mirror-mounted compass, universal garage door opener and power-folding exterior mirrors with automatic dimming. Heated rear seats are added to the Cold Weather Package, which also includes heated front seats, headlight washers and a ski bag.

What We Think
Along with an all-new X5, the 2007 X3 3.0si shows BMW’s commitment to building engaging, car-inspired crossovers. Because of its reputation for engineering high performance sedans and coupes, BMW will likely never rely on CUVs to keep the bottom line black. However, offering two different sized crossovers suggests BMW’s sensitivity to the shifting demands of more space – with credible performance – from its loyal car enthusiast base. The X3’s closest competitor is Acura’s all-new 2007 RDX. Both BMW and Acura seek and succeed in their quest to combine luxury, performance, practicality and style into irresistible all-activity vehicles.
